Research progress in the function of type VI secretion system in plant-associated bacteria

Abstract:

The type VI secretion system (T6SS), a powerful tool of bacteria, is involved in inter-bacterial competition and affects host life activities by injecting effector proteins into prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells. T6SS is ubiquitous in Gram-negative bacteria, mainly existing in Proteobacteria. Although most studies of T6SS have focused on animal bacteria, its role in plant-associated bacteria cannot be ignored. We introduced the T6SS of plant-associated bacteria in detail and summarized the latest research achievements from four aspects: the discovery of T6SS, the role of T6SS in the competition among plant-associated bacteria, the role of T6SS in the interactions between bacteria and plants, and the role of T6SS in the biocontrol of plant diseases. This review aims to provide guidance for the future research on the biological functions and applications of T6SS in plant-associated bacteria.
